Malcolm Rice Patterson papers, 1895-1935.

Bulk consists of newspaper clippings dealing with Patterson's political career, with emphasis on the gubernatorial races of 1906 against John I. Cox, 1908 against Edward Ward Carmack, 1910 against Robert Love Taylor, and 1932 against Hill McAllister and Lewis Pope. Other topics include prohibition and the trial and conviction of Duncan and Robin Cooper for the murder of Edward Ward Carmack. Two boxes contain articles entitled Day by day with Governor Patterson, written for the Memphis Commercial appeal, 1921-1933. Correspondence primarily includes letters to his third wife, Mary Russell Patterson, and letters from Thomas S. Byrne, Catholic bishop of Nashville, and Thomas Frank Gailor, Episcopal bishop of Tennessee. Also included is a letter from Truman H. Alexander concerning the John T. Scopes trial in Dayton, Tennessee. The remaining correspondence consists of letters and telegrams of condolence sent to Mrs. Patterson after Gov. Patterson's death. Scrapbooks focus on Patterson's work as District Attorney General for Shelby County and as U.S Congressman, 1894-1906.
